NOBLE & SPIRITUAL IGNOBLE & SAVAGE
MODERN STEREOTYPES
ALL ARE ALCOHOLICS...
The rates are disproportionately high, many tribes are investigating the reasons for this, and working within their communities to rectify this. It has been called the "perfect colonizer", and has been a modern holocaust for Native Americans (Bentley, 2013).
RICH FROM CASINOS...
They do provide employment and financial revenues for some tribes, yet is not a universal reality for all tribes (Oliff, 2013). Only 4 in 10 federally recognized tribes have casinos.
DON'T PAY TAXES...
They do pay taxes the same as other American citizens. The exception is if they are living on, purchasing goods, or selling goods on reservations.
THEY LIVE IN TEPEES...
Tepees were found in nomadic tribes, that moved around while hunting. Other traditional housing were longhouses, grass houses, and wattle houses, they were specific the different tribes and their needs. Modern day Natives live in houses, apartments, and condos, to name a few.

POCAHONTAS |
The reality is that the Disney adaptation is mostly an inaccurate account, romanticized to suit their story.
She was only 10, when she encountered John Smith, and it is questionable that she "saved" him.
They never had a romance.
She was taken prisoner by the English at 17, for a year.

THEN IS THIS OK?
THE REALITY IS...
2005- The American Psychological Association (APA) advised that all use of American Indian mascots, symbols, and images should be discontinued by all sports teams, universities, and schools (APA, 2005). This was based on the belief that evidence is showing that their are detrimental affects on social identity and self-esteem of Native youth. In addition it may have a negative affect on all students:
